Mayor insists Milan’s ‘interest in San Donato remains’ with alternative plan possible

The Mayor of San Donato has claimed that AC Milan remain interested in undertaking a project in his area, despite all of the talk about San Siro.

As Calcio e Finanza report, everything has been agreed regarding the deal that will see San Siro and the surrounding areas sold to Milan and Inter. The City Council approved of the sale, and now it must pass through a vote in the City Hall, which is not a given.

Many have been asking what this means for Milan’s project in San Donato, given that the club have invested €55m to buy land there. It was originally meant to be the site of the new stadium, when the San Siro idea encountered obstacles, but other potential uses have since emerged.

‘Still an open agreement’

Now, the Mayor of the region in the south-east of the city – Francesco Squeri – has commented to AGI to give his thoughts on the idea the Rossoneri could ‘abandon’ any plans there.

“The Rossoneri’s interest in San Donato remains. They’re not done with San Donato. The Milan city council have deliberated, and now it will go to the city council, but it won’t be an easy path, like all the paths to building a stadium in Italy,” he said.

“We’re calm. While we haven’t spoken to the club’s management in recent weeks, SportLifeCity, in which Milan holds a majority stake, has presented us with the idea of redeveloping the San Francesco area for sports.

“There is still an open agreement with SportLifeCity for the project of a 20,000-seat arena, and here Milan – even if it’s not the stadium, has expressed its desire to build another sports centre. And we, as a municipality, are interested in seeing that area redeveloped in some way for sports.

“It seems to me that things are now moving towards a positive solution for the municipality: I’ve always said that for such an important project, it’s legitimate for the two clubs to have two plans.

“In the meantime, the Program Agreement for San Donato has been frozen, we were waiting for the latest developments in recent days, now we’ll see.”
