Mayor Sala confirms San Siro sale agreement and outlines next steps: “Up to the Council”

The Mayor of Milan Giuseppe Sala has confirmed an agreement is in place with AC Milan and Inter over the sale of San Siro.

The process of trying to build a stadium has gone on for years, and at times it has felt like the Milanese clubs were doomed to never having their own new home. There has even been talk of Milan and Inter moving out of the city limits in order to try cut through red tape.

However, this morning some big news arrived from La Repubblica. They stated that the City Council have agreed a deal with the Rossoneri and the Nerazzurri which will see them sell San Siro and a surrounding area to the clubs, so that the stadium project can become a reality.

Agreement confirmed

Sala spoke to RTL 102.5 about the future of San Siro and the sale negotiations with Milan and Inter in his morning show ‘Beppe Sala a tutto campo’, confirming the news. MilanPress relayed his comments.

“If all goes well, I hope so, but you know, this is anything but a soap opera. I’m crossing all my fingers. Tomorrow we should go to the council because we’ve effectively reached an agreement with the teams.

“The council will complete its task with a resolution, which I think is very positive regarding this project. In a municipality, the mayor and the council act independently on some matters, while on others, for example the sale of important assets like the stadium, it needs to go through the Council.

“We’ll go to the council, then we’ll bring it to the Council, where there will be committees and discussions, then we’ll have to come out with a yes or no. I want to have a clear conscience, to have done what the citizens are calling me to do, that is, to address a problem.

“I will bring it to the Council, I will recommend approval, I will certainly vote in favour, then it will be up to the Council. Timeframe? By the end of the month. The stadium must be ready by 2031, because UEFA are telling us that they will not consider Milan as a venue for the 2032 European Football Championship if San Siro remains.”
