Mazzara: ‘Official signatures are still missing’ – Milan vs. Como Perth game not confirmed

Despite the announcement from the Serie A president Ezio Simonelli about AC Milan’s game against Como being in Perth, not everything is sealed.

In recent days, there has been a lot of conflicting news regarding the plan to play a Serie A game in Perth. The Athletic suggested that everything is far from done, partly because of pressure from FIFA and partly because of the demands of the Asian Football Confederation, which were not expected to be accepted.

Before the Supercoppa Italiana semi-final between Napoli and Milan last Thursday night, the Serie A president Ezio Simonelli claimed that the game will definitely happen in Perth, before the FIGC president seemed to walk back those claims the next day.

Signatures still missing

Pietro Mazzara published his weekly column for MilanNews and he dedicated part of it to giving an update on the situation surrounding the plan to play a European league game outside the continent for the first time.

“Personally, but also as an editorial team, we have never been in favour of holding the Milan-Como match in Perth. It’s a choice we’ve never supported because it’s right that this match be played in Italy, at San Siro, on the first available date after the inauguration of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Olympics.

“Ezio Simonelli, president of the Lega Calcio Serie A, met with Infantino in Qatar during the Intercontinental Cup and announced, to everyone’s surprise, that Milan-Como will be played in Perth.

“This is a preliminary approval from the FIFA president, but the official signatures are still missing, which will arrive only after the FIFA executive committee itself, which is the body that will have to give its final approval.

“Both Milan and Como want an official response soon, because every day that passes is a day lost in terms of organization. And who knows, FIFA might change the rules again, a bit like what happened with Villarreal-Barcelona in Miami, which was cancelled due to the slow response time.”
