Mazzara urges Milan to act on Maignan extension: “Furlani cannot ignore”

The renewal of Mike Maignan is overshadowing a brilliant season for AC Milan so far. In fact, most wins come with a bitter aftertaste.

Thanks to more magic from Maignan this weekend, Milan won yet another big game. Four saves, preventing more than 1.2 xG in the process, can be added to an already phenomenal year which has seen him return to his best form.

However, it could not have come at a worse time. Last season, the Rossoneri didn’t want to offer the goalkeeper a new contract, with his form being listed as one of the reasons. Now, that decision looks likely to cost them.

The Frenchman will walk away for nothing in the summer unless things are solved, and it looks quite possible at this point. Things are under control, it seems, as Igli Tare stated this weekend, but there is no real positivity emerging.

This morning, Pietro Mazzara wrote his view on the topic for MilanNews.

“Everyone wants Mike Maignan’s contract extension, and now the exposure is complete, not only from the fans but also from his teammates.

“Because if a calm, well-mannered, and unconventional player like Matteo Gabbia sent that message to Maignan on Instagram, writing, “Please,” along with a pen, it means that within the squad, they look at the French goalkeeper as a recognised captain, a leader of the dressing room, and back to his best.

“We all know the dynamic surrounding Maignan’s frozen contract extension; the wait-and-see and hesitant decisions of ten months ago were detrimental, and today, Giorgio Furlani cannot ignore this aspect.

“Igli Tare wisely emphasised the professionalism pact he and Max Allegri struck with Maignan this summer, avoiding making statements that could have led to damaging narrative distortions.

“AC Milan knows exactly what they have to do to get Maignan back; now it remains to be seen whether they want to do it or not.
