Tottenham Hotspur defender Micky van de Ven has pulled no punches following their dismal defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. Spurs found themselves 4-0 down after just 22 minutes, with the Dutch international calling it a doomsday scenario.

Head coach Igor Tudor replaced goalkeeper Antonín Kinský after just 17 minutes following two costly errors from the Czech shot stopper, with Antoine Griezmann and Julian Alvarez finding the back of the net for the La Liga side.

The interim boss had dropped Guglielmo Vicario in favour of the 22-year-old goalkeeper who had made just two Carabao Cup starts this season, but quickly had to backtrack on his decision.

Speaking to Dutch broadcaster Ziggo Sport, Van de Ven said: "It's actually a doomsday scenario. Everything that could go wrong went wrong.

"For our goalkeeper it's terrible as well of course. You don't wish that on anyone. For 15 minutes we just conceded goals that you really can't do anything about."

Van de Ven admitted he no longer checks his phone and said: "Right now we're just taking blow after blow after blow. It's just really tough, and now we also have an important match this weekend that I won't be able to play in because I'm suspended.

"It's a really terrible period, I can tell you that. It's really, really awful. I'm not on my phone anymore. I'm completely done with it. Just my family, so it'll be fine.

"It's rough, really rough. I have to keep going. It's part of it, that's life and we'll see what's coming."

Speaking after the game, Tudor was asked about the incident and said: "It happened very rare things in my coaching 15 years, I never do that. It was necessary to preserve the guy, to preserve the team.

"Incredible situation, nothing to comment, you will see. It was, before the game, the right choice to do in the moment like we are.

"Pressure on Vicario, another competition, Toni is a very good goalkeeper. So I was, for me, the right decision. After this, of course, it is easy to say that it was not the right decision.

"I explained to Toni, also speaking after, that he is the right guy and a good goalkeeper. Unfortunately, it happened in this big game, these mistakes.

"We started the game, it was too much for us. In this moment, when we are fragile, we are weak. Even the second half was 4-2, it was almost 4-2 with Richarlison. We tried to score a goal in 4-2 and then we conceded the goal."
