Milan face San Donato question: Mayor Squeri’s words and a new obstacle

AC Milan will not be building their new stadium in San Donato unless there is a big change in plans, so questions are being asked about the site there.

With Milan having proceeded with building a ‘new San Siro’ with Inter, something will still need to be built in the San Francesco area of San Donato. Below are Mayor Francesco Squeri’s words to Il Cittadino di Lodi (via MilanPress), commenting on the latest developments.

“We acknowledge the Milan City Council’s intention. We worked diligently and responsibly to evaluate the San Donato stadium proposal until it was a viable option,” he said.

“A process has come to an end, but the issue of evaluating quality development for the area remains open. The idea that was brought to our attention, a centre for AC Milan’s youth teams, is certainly of great interest.”

San Donato: the TAR ruling and doubts about future projects

The future of the San Francesco area, however, remains uncertain. Recently, the Regional Administrative Court (TAR) upheld the appeal of the Quartiere Affari Consortium against the Municipality and Sport Life City.

It was regarding the amount of green space recognised which requires protecting, which will now increase in terms of volume. This ruling effectively nullifies the July 2021 resolution of the former Checchi administration, which approved the ‘Sport Life City’ plan.

That plan consisted of an 18,000-seat arena and various sports and commercial facilities. Any new project in the area will therefore have to start from scratch and comply with the green space obligation.
