Milan Futuro 2-3 Varesina: Coppa Italia Serie D journey ends after entertaining game

Milan Futuro’s journey in the Coppa Italia Serie D came to an end on Wednesday afternoon as they lost at home against Varesina.

The round of 64 game took place at the Stadio Felice Chinetti in Solbiate Arno, and confidence was high after a thrilling 3-2 league win against Folgore Caratese a few days ago. It was the same scoreline this time too, but Milan were on the wrong end of it.

Massimo Oddo’s side had already progressed through two rounds of the competition, beating Trevigliese 2-0 and Gozzano 0-1. Both matches were played in August, and at stake was a place in the last 32 versus Virtus Ciserano Bergamo.

Milan took the lead through Castiello, who broke the deadlock with a powerful right-footed shot in the 14th minute. After a lacklustre first half, Varesina equalised in the 42nd minute through Testa to ensure it was all square at the break.

The second half saw a back-and-forth between the two No.9s: Magrassi put the Rossoneri back in front in the 54th minute, while Costantino levelled four minutes after that with a shot from the heart of the box.

The winning goal and the subsequent knockout blow came in the 66th minute from a corner, with Vaz heading the ball home with the help of the crossbar.
