Zlatan Ibrahimovic carried the Olympic Torch around the streets of Milano earlier today, and the AC Milan legend has spoken after.
There are few faces more identifiable than Ibrahimovic’s across Europe, and especially in Milano, given he represented both sides of the city. Now, his work is with Milan, though he is no longer a figure on the pitch.
Instead, his influence is felt from a senior position, where he is effectively a vessel for Gerry Cardinale. A role that was probably not expected when he hung up his boots, but one where he is now flourishing.
Ibrahimovic’s words
Today, he gave his influence to the Olympic Games, which will kick off later today, and he took part in the torchbearer ceremony. Then, after completing his part of the journey, he spoke to MilanNews.
“I’m very proud. Even though I’m not Italian, carrying the Olympic flame to Italy is a great emotion. I’m very happy. Have I often said that I’m the king of Milan? No, I said there is a king, but also a God.
“I’m happy, Milan is like a second home to me. I thank the Milano-Cortina 2026 Foundation and all of Italy. I try to give as much as I can to Italy. Now the Olympic Games can begin.”
