Milan loanee Colombo reflects on recent seasons: “I can’t say I’m disappointed”

Lorenzo Colombo has reflected on his departure from AC Milan in the summer, joining Genoa on an initial loan deal that most likely will become an obligation.

After the loan spell at Empoli during the 2024-25 season, his fifth since taking the step up to Milan’s first team, Colombo returned to Milanello in the summer. While it initially seemed like Max Allegri wanted to have a close look at the player, another loan was agreed upon pretty quickly.

Genoa swooped in and secured the striker’s services, adding an option to buy in the deal as well. This will turn into an obligation once certain conditions are met, and we assume one of them is Serie A salvation. In short, he could actually leave the Rossoneri permanently.

Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport for today’s edition (see photo below), Colombo shared his thoughts on the Rossoblu spell so far. He also discussed Milan’s decision to loan him out multiple times, never really getting a proper chance to compete at the club.

On the season so far…

“I’ve made about ten appearances for AC Milan, but it was the Covid era and we played without fans, even at San Siro. Over time, I’ve sought balance, trying to build everything brick by brick. And then I see that many strikers in this Serie A are struggling to score.

“I’m searching within myself for a key that can open important doors. I said to myself: ‘If I’ve reached Serie A, there must be a reason; no one has given me gifts.'”

On being loaned out a lot by Milan…

“I can’t say I’m disappointed, even though changing city, team, coach, teammates, and training centre every year hasn’t been easy; you have to be good at accepting things as they are.

“Today I’m at Genoa, and the affection of the Genoese is certainly felt. Forwards who have made football history have passed through here: Palacio, Milito, more recently Retegui, and Pinamonti, another striker who has been scoring in double figures for some time,” he stated.
