The midfield has been the largest area of focus for many after the summer. However, equal focus needs to go on the defensive moves made by AC Milan.
There have been several questions asked about the business conducted by Milan this summer, across the pitch. It is not a case of ‘Where was a physical striker?’, or ‘Why was the defence not really improved?’.
Instead, it was a mix of both, with other questions also asked several times. So, the Rossoneri are left with a team that many do not really get.
Questions there
As MilanNews writes, the movements in defence were ‘made on the fly’ and Massimiliano Allegri’s ideas of a back four were forcibly changed to a back three. A stylistic overhaul, as well as the profiles, have changed.
Malick Thiaw’s sale remains questioned, solely due to the replacement(s) that were brought. Koni De Winter seemed a good start, but another body was probably required, and David Odogu is not really that, at least not yet.
It is not that Thiaw should not have been sold, after receiving an offer €13 million greater than the one Como presented earlier in the summer, it was a difficult offer to turn down. However, it feels like the Diavolo missed a trick when spending those funds.
