AC Milan has presented its proposal to the Lega Serie A to reach an agreement among the top-flight clubs regarding the cost of away ticket prices.
As MilanNews report, in recent days – after drafting the text – the Milan board sent the proposal to the Lega offices, and this motion is on the agenda at today’s meeting. To be clear, it is not a gesture to clear their name regarding the complaints about the Como match being in Australia.
It stems from a much older era and it also aligns with the club’s desire to increasingly listen to the issues highlighted by its fans, opening institutional working groups. Milan fans have been fighting for years to cap the price of away tickets, and for good reason, with the protest in the Juventus game being an example.
The insane prices set by some clubs (the €55 for Udinese-Milan being the latest example) could lead to many fans canceling their trip. What is the ultimate goal of this proposal? There are three answers, according to the Rossoneri:
➤ Increase in spectators inside stadiums
➤ Consequent improvement of the match “product”, enriched by a larger audience;
➤ Consequent increase in the value of that product
Obviously, among the topics of discussion will be the maximum price as well as the ticket sales and management formulas for away stands, where it would be advisable to delegate sales directly to the visiting clubs with a clear purchasing method that doesn’t change every two weeks.
This request to cap prices for away stands must also depend on the type of product being offered. This practice is already in place in the Premier League, La Liga and all UEFA competitions.
UEFA has specific regulations regarding the price cap for away-seat tickets. The latest revision, a year ago, established the following:
➤ Away section cap, Champions League: €50
➤ Away section cap, Europa League: €35
➤ Away section cap, Conference League: €25
The English league introduced a price cap on away stands in the 2016/17 season, setting it at a maximum of £30 (around €35 today), confirming it before the start of the 2022/23 season for the following three seasons. The figure will then be revised in 2025, after nine seasons with the price cap in place.
The Spanish league, on the other hand, is the most recent to introduce this measure: away fans will be guaranteed a minimum of 300 tickets at a fixed price of €30 to attend matches between the participating teams, namely 14 out of 20: Almería, Cádiz, Sevilla, Betis, Valencia, Atlético de Madrid, Girona, Mallorca, Celta, Real Sociedad, Athletic, Granada, Las Palmas and Alavés .
Real Madrid, Barcelona, Getafe, Rayo Vallecano, Villarreal and Osasuna, however, are the teams that were not involved in this agreement.
The prices in Ligue 1 are even lower. The French league has in fact introduced a price cap on tickets for the away stands, setting the price at €10, which drops to 5 euros for Ligue 2.
“The price of seats reserved for visiting supporters, representing 5% of the stadium capacity with a maximum of 1,000 seats, is set at €10 including VAT in Ligue 1 Uber Eats and €5 including VAT in Ligue 2 BKT”, explains the French league in its regulations.
