Mohamed Salah faces Liverpool teammates for first time since fiery interview

1 day ago 33

Mohamed Salah came face to face with his Liverpool teammates on Sunday for the first time since his bombshell interview at Elland Road.

The 33-year-old told reporters after the 3-3 draw against Leeds United that he felt he had been "thrown under the bus" by the club, and that his relationship with head coach Arne Slot has essentially broken down. Those comments will have long-term implications for Salah, no doubt, and perhaps even for the future Slot.

The latter will give an update on Salah's remarkable claims on Monday when he addresses questions before the Champions League clash against Inter Milan.

Preparations have already begun ahead of that game, with Liverpool's players returning to the AXA Training Centre on Sunday for a recovery session.

Salah, who didn't play any part at Leeds, was also present at the club's training base. It is not clear if he was speaking to Slot or taking part in a session as normal.

But the Egyptian's reunion with his Liverpool teammates may have made for an awkward exchange.

It's unlikely his words will have been well received by a squad in desperate need of a mood change.

This has only heightened the pressure on Salah, Slot, and the entire Liverpool locker room.

Some insight into how the players have reacted to the news could be gleaned on Monday, when Liverpool hosts open training before flying to Italy.

Whether Salah is even involved is uncertain, particularly given that he is due to soon meet up with the Egypt squad ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations. Perhaps granting him an early departure could be an easy solution.

If Salah is involved at all, it's unlikely the winger will start at the San Siro on Tuesday.

In the meantime, his decision to speak has earned criticism from ex-Reds Michael Owen and Stan Collymore. Jamie Carragher, who Salah called out during his interview, has not yet voiced his opinion on the matter.

Liverpool's No. 11 has now played just 45 minutes across the Reds' last three games. Previously, he had started all of Slot's first 50 league matches in charge. He was the only member of last season's title-winning squad to start all 38 games.

But a run of four matches without a goal or assist meant Salah was dropped by Slot for last week's win over West Ham.

The attacker has provided two goals and no assists from his last 12 Liverpool appearances.
