Mohamed Salah shortlisted for prestigious award Liverpool star has won twice already

Mohamed Salah could be about to add another trophy to his already impressive haul after the Liverpool star was shortlisted for one of Africa’s biggest awards.

The 33-year-old hasn’t enjoyed the best of starts to the current season, with Salah just one of the many Liverpool stars struggling in what has been a hugely disappointing couple of months for the Reds.

Arne Slot’s side has lost seven of its last 10 games in all competitions, and already finds itself eight points behind Arsenal in the Premier League title race. The usually reliable Salah hasn’t been able to turn his side’s fortunes around either, with his place in the side now being questioned.

Salah’s contributions to Liverpool’s success over the years though can’t be forgotten though, especially after such a stellar year in last season’s title success. He scored 34 goals and added 23 assists in 52 appearances across all competitions, leading him to sweep the individual awards in England.

And he might be about to add another accolade from his home continent, with Salah having been shortlisted for the 2025 African men’s player of the year award.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced its three-man shortlist on Sunday, with Salah joined by Paris Saint-Germain and Morocco star Achraf Hakimi, and Galatasaray and Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen.

Mohamed Salah of Liverpool and Achraf Hakimi of Paris Saint-Germain challenge during the UEFA Champions League 2024/25 UEFA Champions League 2024/25 Round of 16 Second Leg match between Liverpool FC and Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield on March 11, 2025 in Liverpool, England.

Mohamed Salah and Achraf Hakimi are both in the running for African Player of the Year.

Salah has won the award twice before, in 2017 and 2018, and has finished in the top three on three other occasions. Osimhen won the award back in 2023, while Hakimi is looking for his first win, having finished runner-up in each of the last two years.

The ceremony will be held in the Moroccan capital of Rabat on Wednesday, with both the men’s and women’s awards being presented. Moroccan stars Ghizlane Chebbak and Sanaa Mssoudy, and Nigeria’s Rasheedat Ajibade have been nominated for the women’s title.

Whether Salah will be in attendance is not known, with the winger due to report back to Liverpool in the coming days after being in action for Egypt during the international break.

Salah played the full 90 minutes as his country was beaten 2-0 by Uzbekistan in the Al Ain International Cup on Friday. The Pharaohs are due to face Cape Verde in the third-place play-off on Monday, although it has been confirmed that Salah won’t be involved.

He will though remain in Dubai with his international teammates, despite also being given a rest from training ahead of Monday’s game.

His absence is not expected to affect his availability for Liverpool, with the Reds set to return to action against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
