Moretto: Allegri ‘not fully onboard’ with Mateta signing amid tactical concerns

Massimiliano Allegri didn’t consider Jean-Philippe Mateta as the ideal reinforcement for AC Milan’s attack, according to the latest updates from Matteo Moretto.

Mateta was the talk of the town in the final days of the transfer window, with Milan even carrying out medical tests amid the advanced negotiations. In the end, the deal fell through as the Rossoneri had concerns about the striker’s knee, which will require surgery.

Since then, it has been clarified by many that Milan only made a move for the striker as there was an opportunity to get him earlier than first planned, i.e. the summer. However, while the management had clearly followed him for some time, Mateta didn’t excite everyone.

Allegri was hesitant

In his latest video on Fabrizio Romano’s channel, Matteo Moretto explained that Allegri actually had other targets in mind for the No.9 role. As such, he wasn’t fully onboard with signing the French striker, although he most likely wouldn’t have blocked the deal if it had come to that.

“Allegri wasn’t fully onboard with the idea of signing Mateta. He didn’t consider him the right striker to focus on. Milan then proceeded to consider him, above all because of Mateta’s desire to speed up the negotiation.

“Let’s say that he wasn’t the first choice for Allegri. The ‘no’ from Milan in January will also remain for the future, more specifically for the summer, so Mateta won’t wear the Milan shirt next season either,” he stated.
