Moretto: Maignan ‘frost’ and doubts about targets – the latest on Milan’s goalkeeper situation

Matteo Moretto has once again painted a bleak outlook regarding Mike Maignan’s future, while speaking about a potential replacement.

Maignan was heavily linked with an exit early in the summer transfer window but ended up being convinced to stay. The issue is that this is the final year of his contract, and at present it does not seem like an agreement over a renewal is anywhere close to being reached.

As a result, speculation has begun on two fronts. The first is as to where Maignan might end up if he does decide to leave – with Juventus the latest club to be linked with him – and the second is who the Rossoneri might turn to in pursuit of a new number one.

Moretto on Maignan, Caprile and Atubolu

Moretto gave an update on the future of starting goalkeeping spot at Milan, including the writing on the wall regarding Maignan and who might be lined up to replace him.

“Maignan is a particular, delicate topic, to be monitored day after day, but for the moment there is frost between the parties regarding the renewal. There has been talk of Caprile and Atubolu,” he said (via MilanNews).

“The first, born in 2001 with a contract expiring in 2029 at Cagliari, is a name that Milan is monitoring but would not consider as a first-choice goalkeeper, as a starter, and therefore as Maignan’s deputy.

“At the moment, Caprile’s stock is low and I will also give you a background on Atubolu, a very strong goalkeeper, there is great talk of him, a 23-year-old from Freiburg who practically grew up in Freiburg.

“His contract expires in 2027, so even on a contractual level he could be a very interesting opportunity on the market, he is already in the circle of the German national team, especially under 21, he has yet to break into the first team.

“But, he is being monitored because he is one of the talents on the scene in that position. I just want to tell you that Atubolu has a number of German clubs that are following him carefully, there is fierce competition. To date, the information of that I have at my disposal is this.”
