Moretto: ‘Modric’s case is unusual’ – why a renewal with Milan is far from certain

Luka Modric has enjoyed a fantastic start to life as an AC Milan player, but a contract extension is not a formality at present.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport reported earlier in the week, Modric has started 11 of 11 Serie A games for Milan, without even remotely resembling a player nearing the end of his time on the playing field. On the contrary, they’re already thinking about extending his contract, which appears to be a formality.

Luka will decide

Now, a clarification has arrived regarding the aforementioned indiscretion. Matteo Moretto wanted to shed light on the Croatian’s situation, during his daily video for Fabrizio Romano’s Italian YouTube channel.

“There’s a lot of talk about a possible contract extension for Luka Modric. That plus-one on his contract is more the player’s responsibility than Milan’s. Usually the club decides, but Modric’s case is unusual. He asked Milan to be able to decide personally at the end of the season,” he said.

This means that the clause for next season isn’t a unilateral option for the club, nor is it an automatic renewal upon reaching certain appearances. Modrić alone will decide what to do at the end of the season.

Moretto continues : “It will be up to the player to decide and understand later , perhaps in the spring, what kind of team to take. There are already clubs in the Saudi Pro League that are gathering information. Modric is currently focused on Milan. It will be up to him to decide, but at the moment it’s still early.”
