Moretto: Only Milan can trigger one-year clause in Maignan’s new contract

Mike Maignan has signed his contract renewal at Casa Milan, per various sources, and there is one clause in the deal that is worth expanding on.

Earlier this afternoon, Maignan arrived at Milan’s headquarters to sign his contract renewal with the club. Shortly thereafter, it was reported by various sources that the deal had indeed been signed, meaning just the official announcement is missing.

For the Rossoneri, this is obviously huge news as the chances of a renewal appeared to be slim to none last summer. Not to mention that the Frenchman has been absolutely fantastic this season, only increasing his value.

A clause for Milan

As highlighted by Matteo Moretto, the renewal is for the next four years and will come into effect in July, meaning he will be tied to the club until 2030. However, there is also an option for an additional year, which would make it 2031.

This option, as the journalist continues, works in favour of Milan and not Maignan. In other words, the Rossoneri will decide whether to exercise it or not, and they don’t need the player’s approval in that process.

This is how the management usually does things when including an option for an additional year, except in Luka Modric’s case. Then, it was agreed that both parties needed to be on the same page.
