Moretto: Striker pursuit and a South American talent – the latest on Milan’s transfer plans

AC Milan have not yet made a decision on the striker they will pursue in January, but Mateo Pellegrino seems an unlikely option.

Milan spent over €70m on Christopher Nkunku and Santiago Gimenez, but both have not started the season in the best way. The Frenchman was the most expensive signing of the summer, and the latter arrived in the winter, but they have combined for zero league goals so far in 2025-26.

Earlier in the week the rising Parma star Mateo Pellegrino was discussed as a viable option by La Gazzetta dello Sport. However, he is not the only possible name that Igli Tare and his team are monitoring.

Moretto’s update

The journalist Matteo Moretto spoke in a video on Fabrizio Romano’s YouTube channel about various topics related to Milan’s movements including renewals that are close and also the possible signing of a new striker.

“There’s a lot of talk about AC Milan’s attack and how they can strengthen it ahead of the January transfer window. I want to tell you that Milan are monitoring certain players, but they still have to decide, meet directly with their coach,” he said.

“That fateful pre-transfer meeting has yet to take place. There’s still no clear direction. Milan want to see how the team will react to the upcoming matches and the coming weeks, and also understand what happens based on unforeseen circumstances.

“We’ve received a lot of inquiries regarding Mateo Pellegrino, the 2001-born Argentine striker from Parma. From what we understand, Pellegrino isn’t currently being considered by the Rossoneri management, and I don’t think he’s a name worth adding to Milan’s list.

“Milan have two non-EU spots available and will focus on scouting for young talent – perhaps from South America – in the coming months to strengthen the squad.”
