Joe Gomez lamented Liverpool's lack of resilience as a main issue with the team's dismal defense of the Premier League title.

The Reds have been largely disappointing for much of the season and look set to finish the season without silverware unless they perform a stunning turnaround against Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of their Champions League quarterfinal tie.

Even qualifying for the European competition next season is not yet guaranteed, despite the top five set to earn passage to the tournament. With Arne Slot's players currently fifth, they face hot competition from Chelsea, Brentford and Everton, with just three points separating the four teams.

The Reds are on a three-match losing streak across three competitions and next face Fulham on Saturday at Anfield in a huge clash that will see sections of the Liverpool faithful protest against increasing ticket prices.

Currently the Reds' longest-serving player, Joe Gomez, opened up about Liverpool's struggles this season, pinpointing his side's inability to handle setbacks during matches.

With eight league goals conceded in the 90th minute or later this season, that's the most Liverpool has let in during a single season, surpassing a total of seven back in the 2010/11 campaign.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, the 28-year-old defender said: "I think one of our disappointments this year is probably our resilience in dealing with those setbacks.

"I think in games obviously we've conceded a lot of late goals and our reactions to the setbacks within games – whether that be conceding late or not scoring chances and so on and so forth – has probably been one of our downfalls this year.

"But at the end of the day, it's never too late to change and we have to draw a line in the sand somewhere and try to move forward. I think that's all we can try to get across to one another and that's one thing the gaffer's got across to us is a lot of it is about mentality.

"Obviously, that word has been used a lot here in the last decade, and we have to try to keep emphasizing it."

A telling indicator of the Reds' mentality was starkly admitted by Virgil van Dijk in the wake of their 4-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup quarterfinal.

The Liverpool captain stunningly admitted he believes his side gave up during the brutal defeat at the Etihad Stadium.

He said after full-time: "You come out of the dressing room [at half-time] to hopefully score the 2-1 as soon as possible to change the game, but obviously the opposite happens.

"Then to come back from 3-0 is very difficult. But also, you shouldn't give up. That is maybe at a certain point what happened."
