Tottenham Hotspur fans finally know their official new captain after the departure of Heung-min Son to LAFC last week.
Tottenham Hotspur have since bid farewell to Heung-min Son, who had captained this Tottenham side since 2023, after he announced his departure in front of his hometown fans during Spurs’ pre-season tour of Asia.
Son’s legacy as a Tottenham legend has been sealed, as has his legacy as club captain, with the Korean ending the club’s 17-year wait for a major honour by winning the Europa League trophy last season.
The Korean forward has departed for LAFC after his decade-long stay at Hotspur Way and is now set to link up once more with former Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris.
Cristian Romero named Tottenham captain for 2025/26 season
With Heung-min Son now gone, the captaincy at Tottenham has been left vacant, and manager Thomas Frank had already hinted that a new club captain would be named before the first competitive fixture of the season.
Tottenham Hotspur have now confirmed that, following the departure of former captain Heung-min Son, Cristian Romero will be taking the captain’s armband for the 2025/26 season.
Romero is no stranger to leadership, having been the club’s previous vice-captain, often filling in for Son whenever the South Korean was not in the starting eleven.
Thomas Frank said the following on naming Romero as captain (Tottenham official): “I had a good conversation with Cuti Romero, and he’s going to be our captain.
“He was very honoured and very happy about it. It’s a big thing and should be to lead this wonderful club out on the pitch, not just for this Super Cup, but also throughout the season.
“I think he has all the right qualities. He leads from his behaviour on the pitch, driving the team forward in every way, and outside the pitch he’s always pushing the team.
“I want a leadership group as well. Of course, one will wear the armband and be the captain, but I would like to have as many leaders as possible, four to five in the leadership group who can help, because it’s the same with me, I can’t do everything on my own and need a superb coaching staff around me. I will name that leadership group after the window to give me time to assess everything.”
What Romero brings to Spurs as captain
Cristian Romero is a World Cup winner, a Copa America winner and a Europa League winner, which speaks volumes about his winning mindset.
With the captaincy now handed to Romero, it should put to bed any speculation regarding his future at Tottenham, particularly as Atletico Madrid were once keen on securing his signature.
The 27-year-old will now be gearing up to lead Tottenham in their first competitive clash against Paris Saint-Germain, where he will have the opportunity to lift silverware in his first outing as captain.
