Nico Schlotterbeck has sent Liverpool fans wild after the Borussia Dortmund defender was spotted replying to Florian Wirtz on social media.

Schlotterbeck was one of a number of people congratulating Wirtz on his first goal for Liverpool after the German international grabbed the winner in the Reds’ 2-1 victory over Wolves on Saturday.

Wirtz dazzled with his performance at Anfield as his goal proved to be the difference after Ryan Gravenberch had opened the scoring in the first half, with the hosts making hard work of the game after the break as they toiled to a victory that lifted them into the Premier League’s top four.

Celebrating his first goal for the club afterward, Wirtz posted a series of pictures from the game to his Instagram account, captioned with a love heart emoji.

The post drew responses from a host of his teammates, including Jeremie Frimpong, Hugo Ekitike and Milos Kerkez, but it was Schlotterbeck’s response that seemed to catch a lot of people’s eyes.

The Dortmund star replied with a gif of Wirtz shrugging during his time at Bayer Leverkusen, and that of course didn’t go unspotted by Liverpool supporters.

Schlotterbeck was inundated with replies from Reds fans, most of them saying “come to Liverpool”. The 26-year-old has been linked with a move to Anfield in recent months, and speculation is growing as the January transfer window approaches.

The defender is under contract at Dortmund until 2027, and there has been no sign of an extension yet, which has seen the links with a move away grow.

Whether his reply to Wirtz has any deeper meaning than just a friendly message to his international teammate, only Schlotterbeck will know, but Liverpool fans were never going to miss the opportunity to make their feelings clear.

Schlotterbeck did address his future earlier this season when links with Liverpool were beginning to emerge, with the defender insisting he’s in no rush to make a decision on a potential move.

“I have a contract at Dortmund for more than one and a half years. My agent and I are going to discuss my future, but we’re under no pressure,” Schlotterbeck said back in October.

“I feel very good at Dortmund, and Niko [Kovac, Dortmund boss] has already shown a path here that is fun and exciting for the future.

“My next contract is very important for my career, so I really want to make the right decision. My agent won’t talk publicly about it - we’ll see what happens.”
