Massimo Oddo has explained why Milan Futuro’s relegation to Serie D shouldn’t be seen as solely a bad thing, seeing as many of the youngsters will benefit from it.
Milan Futuro came to life ahead of the 2024-25 season as a project for the Rossoneri to develop players in Serie A. However, it ended up being a very tough project and the team was relegated to Serie D after losing the relegation play-off against SPAL.
Many mistakes were made along the way, from choosing Daniele Bonera as the head coach to not properly reinforcing the team, but at least the future is a little brighter. Indeed, Massimo Oddo has decided to remain as the coach of the team.
Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport a few days ago, Oddo shared his thoughts on all things Milan Futuro. Among other things, he explained why Geoffrey Moncada wasn’t necessarily wrong when he said it wouldn’t make much of a difference if the team were in Serie C or Serie D.
A few months ago, Geoffrey Moncada said that for your project, being in Serie C or Serie D made little difference. What differences do you see between the two levels?
“Moncada was misunderstood; he meant it’s important to play a different style of football than youth football. However, in Serie C, you also need slightly older players to help the younger players, but in Serie D there isn’t such a great need.
“Ours will be an extremely young team, where 17-year-olds will be playing the football of the seniors. We’re talking about guys who are technically and tactically more advanced than at their level, but in this category, they’ll find plenty of opponents to suit them.
“Situations and characteristics they’d never find in the youth sector. Physicality, experience, cunning, and so on. If a boy has potential and perhaps has already gained experience in the Primavera, it’s better for him to play in Serie D,” Oddo stated.
