AC Milan have confirmed that goalkeeper Marco Sportiello has left the club, rejoining Atalanta on a permanent basis.
A statement on the official website reads as follows: “AC Milan can confirm that Marco Sportiello has made a permanent transfer to Atalanta BC. The Club would like to thank Marco for his constant commitment and professionalism and wishes him all the best for his future personal and professional endeavours.”
Atalanta have also announced the deal too, and it marks a homecoming of sorts for Sportiello, who went through the youth ranks of the Bergamo club until making his Serie A debut back in 2013. He left in 2017 but returned from 2019 to 2023, racking up 137 appearances across all competitions.
Sportiello became the deputy to Mike Maignan when he signed from Atalanta two years ago, replacing Ciprian Tatarusanu. He played just 12 times over the two seasons in the end, conceded 14 goals and keeping five clean sheets.
It is expected that he will be replaced by another veteran Italian in Pietro Terracciano, who signed a contract with Milan earlier in the week. The announcement should be imminent on that front, given that Fiorentina have confirmed his exit, as the Rossoneri swap out one deputy goalkeeper for another.
