Official: Massa will officiate Milan’s game against Fiorentina – mixed record so far

The experienced Davide Massa has been chosen by the AIA for AC Milan’s game against Fiorentina, but the Rossoneri have a very mixed record with the referee.

It’s been a season filled with refereeing controversy, perhaps it’s under the microscope now more than ever, and Milan have been on the receiving end of some strange calls. Just a few days ago, in the 1-1 draw against Genoa, a seemingly non-existent penalty was given against the Rossoneri.

As such, some fans like to keep tabs on the referee appointments for each round, which is presented by the AIA (Italian Referees’ Association). Yesterday, the appointments for the 20th matchday were announced and next to Fiorentina-Milan was Davide Massa’s name.

Many penalties but not wins

At 44 years old, Massa is one of the most experienced referees in Italy and he has also officiated a lot of international games. Shifting focus to his record with Milan, tomorrow’s game will be his 25th involving the Rossoneri, with 7 wins, 11 draws and 6 defeats for them so far.

In other words, the record is very mixed and the fact that there have been so many draws is a concern, especially given the Rossoneri’s current tendency to draw games. On the bright side, Massa has only handed out two red cards to Milan (both second yellows).

Leao and Massa

There have also been 9 penalties in favour of the Rossoneri, which puts them at the top as far as Massa and penalties are concerned along with Lazio (also 9 penalties). The latest Milan game he officiated was against Juve last season, a 2-0 defeat, and the one before that was the 2-2 draw against Lazio.

Massa received a lot of praise for that last game, which bodes well, but there has also been som controversy with him. The 1-1 draw against Bologna almost three years ago is one example.
