Oliver Glasner explains why beating Liverpool was 'even better' after dramatic scenes

1 hour ago 2

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner felt it was extra sweet to beat Liverpool in the Premier League weeks after beating the Reds on penalties at Wembley — because of the start to the new campaign that Arne Slot has overseen.

Liverpool went behind twice against Crystal Palace, but had not been a goal down at any stage of this season prior to that. And Glasner thought his players deserved the points for their performance, which should have seen them go in at half-time more than just one goal ahead.

"Winning is always a great result but when it is against the champions, it is even even better," Glasner told Sky Sports. "We played the best first half since I arrived.

"We were 1-0 up but teams like Liverpool are able to strike back. The pressure was high and then they got the equalizer.

"But huge credit to the players, we struck back and got the winner at the end, I am delighted for Eddie Nketiah coming back from a long injury.

"These are the moments why we love football. The fans will have a great Saturday evening now. We deserved it. Great performance, great game, great win."

Italian forward Federico Chiesa had emerged from the bench to level the scores at 1-1 at Selhurst Park before Nketiah's strike into the corner.

"We deserved the win," Glasner then told BBC Match of the Day. "We played an amazing first half and had a deserved lead. To overcome the pressure of Liverpool, they deserved an equalizer, but I'm delighted at the reaction of our team.

"Every player is so important; all the subs came on to help us to win the game. I am really proud of the performance.

"We talk about our personality, we always go for the win. Everybody who is close to Crystal Palace got their reward today. The fans will have a great Saturday evening, as will the whole club.

"The players showed so much confidence. We made so many runs, the quality of the passes, runs into the box, it was excellent.

"We will analyze the game and take in all this positivity. I said to the players to enjoy this evening. It is the best recovery! You have to enjoy these moments, otherwise you have to ask why you are doing it."

Liverpool will have the chance to bounce back in Turkey against Galatasaray in the Champions League on Tuesday. Arne Slot's men then face a trip to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea next Saturday before the next international break.
