Mike Maignan has been very good for AC Milan this season and the stats certainly back that up, having prevented the most goals in Serie A.
At the start of the summer, when Maignan ultimately decided to stay at Milan despite very concrete interest from elsewhere, few expected the development that we are currently seeing. Indeed, not only is the goalkeeper close to a renewal, but he’s also performing on the pitch.
In the 3-1 win against Como on Thursday, he kept Milan in the game with some very advanced saves and was thus given a 9/10 in our player ratings. If you have read our player ratings pieces before, you will know that a 9 isn’t something we give out easily.
Stats are clear
As highlighted by Opta, via MilanData, Maignan has actually prevented the most goals out of any goalkeeper in Serie A this season. If you look at the xG, i.e. Expected Goals, the Frenchman has helped keep out 7.7 goals.
Indeed, he has only conceded 16 goals as opposed to the 23.7 Expected Goals On Target that Milan have conceded. The penalty saves on Paulo Dybala and Hakan Calhanoglu definitely spring to mind when thinking about decisive Maignan actions this season.

Against Como, it was the save on Da Cunha that stood out. The midfielder’s header was more or less straight the keeper, but it was from such close range and with so much power. Maignan also kept out the ‘rebound’ that followed despite being off balance.
