It already seems like AC Milan will be active in January, but the circumstances will certainly be different to this year’s winter mercato.
Rewind nine months and Milan were in the final stages of the January mercato, panicking to try and fix a squad that was underperforming whilst also riding the highs of the Supercoppa Italiana. Put frankly, it was a mess.
The Rossoneri signed with no structure, and whilst it may have seemed interesting on the face of it, the squad did not really improve. Santiago Gimenez still brings questions, whilst Kyle Walker and Joao Felix both left as quickly as they arrived.
Ordine discusses fears of repeat
Now, the Diavolo may make a few deals in the upcoming mercato, too. However, it should be a little more structured. Massimiliano Allegri’s team are performing well, and the gaps are potentially clearer than they were last year.
Nevertheless, Franco Ordine believes that it has the potential to be a messy month, as he wrote for MilanNews.
“There was a strong risk that the full extent of the diabolical emergency experienced by AC Milan in recent weeks, after the infamous international break, would be revealed in Bergamo.
“Tare said: “We couldn’t have foreseen that six injured players would return!”. And yes, it should have been foreseen because in the absence of the cups, there were precisely the breaks for the national teams, which have become a hellish trap for the clubs.
“And so the squad, reduced to just 19 outfield players, is a meagre number to aim for the Champions League, neglecting both the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa d’Italia from now on.

“On this point I would like to add a note: while there is time, those at AC Milan who – according to the repeated reconstructions of the CEO of the Lega Serie A, Luigi De Siervo – have been pushing for the trip to Australia, it would be better for them to withdraw the crazy idea and reschedule the trip to Italy or at least to a more convenient location because the potential consequences, falling during the turning point of the tournament (early February), could prove disastrous for the standings.
“Tare’s statement in Bergamo seems to hint at a plan to use the January transfer window again to strengthen the squad.
“If that were the case, they should act now, because having reinforcements at Milanello immediately in early January would be a valuable contribution, given that there won’t be the usual Christmas break this year either.”
