Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes questioned Liverpool's recruitment as he analyzed the club's struggles since the start of the season.
When the transfer window closed just a few weeks into the season, Liverpool was hailed for its signings by many observers, having spent an eye-watering amount of money on several high-profile players.
The sum committed to signing Florian Wirtz was at one point a potential Premier League record fee, but that didn't last long as Liverpool committed an even bigger fee to the Alexander Isak deal.
The Reds also signed Hugo Ekitike for a huge fee, while Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Giovanni Leoni and Giorgi Mamardashvili cost significant amounts of money too.
Liverpool began the season with a series of unconvincing wins, and those unconvincing wins soon turned into losses; the team is currently on a run of seven losses in 10 games.
Scholes named Wirtz and Frimpong as two players who don't suit the way that Liverpool currently plays. “It seems like they brought players in that don’t really suit the system,” Scholes said on The Good, The Bad and The Football Podcast. “Frimpong, Wirtz.”
Robbie Fowler also appeared on the podcast and agreed with Scholes about Frimpong, saying that the Netherlands international is more suited to an attacking role than one as a full-back.
Frimpong has not featured very often for his new club due to a series of hamstring problems, but when he has played, he has not convinced as a full-back.
“Frimpong is the biggest example [of a player not suiting Liverpool's current system]," Fowler said. "Frimpong was brought in as a Trent replacement; he’s a wing-back."
Fowler also discussed Kerkez's struggles at left-back since the start of the season. The Hungary international was widely regarded as the best left-back in the Premier League last term, but has struggled to rediscover the form he showed at Bournemouth since moving to Anfield.
Kerkez lined up in Liverpool's first nine league games but has been replaced by Andy Robertson in the last two games, and Fowler suggested that Kerekz is struggling to adapt to the pressure of playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world.
Fowler said: “Kerkez was everyone’s favorite left back last year, and he’s come in... so when you’re playing for Liverpool, when you’re playing for Man United – it’s different than playing for Bournemouth. It’s because there’s pressure.”
