Manchester United legend Paul Scholes praised Liverpool for not standing still in the transfer market, despite winning the Premier League. The Reds cantered to the title, wrapping it up with four games to spare, but despite the team's brilliant form last season, the squad has been tweaked significantly over the summer.
Six players have been sold in Luis Diaz, Jarell Quansah, Caoimhin Kelleher, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Tyler Morton and Nat Phillips, while five big signings have been made in Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong and Giorgi Mamardashvili.
Scholes likened Liverpool's approach in the transfer market to the approach Sir Alex Ferguson used to take at Old Trafford after winning the league.
“When you win the league, a lot of teams relax, but when we [Manchester United] won the league, we go again," Scholes said on The Overlap. "We buy our Rio Ferdinands, Wayne Rooneys, your Bebatovs, and you bring more quality. Liverpool have done that.
“I agree [with Jamie Carragher] though that the planning seems weird to me, what they’ve done with Ekitike. They didn’t spend anything last summer though, so there is that money there. T
"he ambition now is to be the best in Europe, and if you bring [Alexander] Isak into it, who is the best centre forward in the world at this point – you (Carragher) say as a Liverpool fan you’d feel uncomfortable spending £120 million for him, as a United fan, I’d spend £150 million on him.”
Scholes was responding to a remark made by Carragher, after the Liverpool legend said he did not agree with the idea of the Reds breaking the bank to sign Newcastle striker Isak.
"He [Alexander Isak] will be an amazing signing," Carragher said. "But from a fan’s point of view for myself, I don’t want Liverpool to spend £150 million on Isak.
"There’s something about Liverpool buying another striker [Hugo Ekitike], and he’s backup. Something about it doesn’t feel right to me."
Liverpool's chances of signing Isak appear to have taken a blow after it emerged that Benjamin Sesko, the player that Newcastle appears to have targeted as a possible replacement for Isak, wants to join Manchester United.
Sesko has reportedly agreed personal terms with United over a move to Old Trafford, with an agreement between United and RB Leipzig over a fee not expected to be an issue.
