Penalty pain and individual landmarks: All the key stats from Juventus vs. AC Milan

AC Milan and Juventus were left with a point apiece on Sunday night after playing out a goalless draw at the Allianz Stadium.

Juve thought they were about to take the lead early in the second half when a cross fell to Federico Gatti a few yards out, but Mike Maignan made an amazing stop. At the other end Christian Pulisic failed to convert a penalty, and Rafael Leao missed some big chances too.

What the stats say

We can’t help but feel this is a stat line that is a good reflection of how the game really went. Possession was almost perfectly split as both sides had their spells on top in each half.

However, Milan are well ahead on Expected Goals, and had 1 big chance to 0 for the hosts. They also had one more shot, and one more shot on target.

A scoreboard displaying a 0-0 draw between Juventus and AC Milan. Juventus logo with "JJ" in black and AC Milan logo with "ACM 1899" in red are shown at the top. Statistics include possession at 51% for Juventus and 49% for AC Milan, expected goals at 0.68 for Juventus and 1.74 for AC Milan, big chances at 0 for Juventus and 1 for AC Milan, total shots at 12 for Juventus and 13 for AC Milan, shots on target at 3 for Juventus and 4 for AC Milan, corners at 6 for Juventus and 0 for AC Milan, yellow cards at 2 for each team, and no red cards for either team.

Deadlock

Milan have kept four clean sheets in the first six games of a Serie A season for the second time in the three-points-for-a-win era (since 1994-95), after 2006-07 (also four on that occasion).

The last eight Serie A meetings between Juventus and Milan have seen just six goals, an average of 0.75 per match.

Three of the last four Serie A meetings between the Bianconeri and the Rossoneri have ended 0-0, as many times as the previous 36.

Penalty pain

Penalty kicks continue to be a problem for Milan, as evidenced by this truly shocking statistic: since the start of 2024, the Rossoneri have missed seven of their 13 penalties in Serie A (54%). This is a record among the top five European leagues in the period.

It was Pulisic’s second missed spot kick in a Rossoneri shirt, and the interesting thing is that he also missed the other in Turin last season against Torino, when Vanja Milinkovic-Savic saved it.

Individual landmarks

Massimiliano Allegri has become the coach with the most appearances in the history of Juventus vs. Milan matches in all competitions (since 1929-30): 32, 21 with Juventus and 11 with AC Milan – surpassing Giovanni Trapattoni (31).

Rafael Leão is the fifth Portuguese player to reach 200 Serie A appearances in the three-points-for-a-win era, after Rui Costa (339), Mário Rui (248), Fernando Couto (247), and Miguel Veloso (214).

Davide Bartesaghi (18 years and 120 days) is the fourth youngest player to play in a Juventus vs. Milan match in Serie A in the three-points-for-a-win era, after Donnarumma (16 years and 269 days), Camarda (16 years and 314 days), and Kean (17 years and 10 days).

Finally, there is Matteo Gabbia’s excellent individual performance. He has earned an Italy re-call, and will leave to join Gennaro Gattuso’s squad.
