Pep Guardiola confirms major double Man City injury boost amid Liverpool title race

5 hours ago 2

Manchester City will welcome both Rodri and Phil Foden back from injury this weekend, Pep Guardiola has confirmed ahead of his side taking on Spurs in the Premier League in Saturday's early kick-off.

Last weekend, Manchester City hammered Wolves 4-0 a day after Liverpool had beaten Bournemouth 4-2. Arsenal, the other likely title challenger, beat Manchester United 1-0, while Chelsea could only manage a goalless draw at home to Crystal Palace.

Hosting Tottenham at the Etihad Stadium this Saturday, Guardiola will be able to field Rodri and Foden. But defender Josko Gvardiol, midfielder Mateo Kovacic, and winger Savinho are all still missing.

Guardiola said Rodri and Foden could have played last weekend but they were not in rhythm after injuries disrupted the end of their pre-season. Both stars are set to feature against Spurs.

Earlier in the day, it was confirmed that defender Ruben Dias has signed a two-year contract extension.

The 28-year-old's previous deal had been set to expire in 2027 but his new one will take him through to 2029, with the option of a further 12 months.

"I am incredibly happy today," Dias said. "I love Manchester it is my home now — and I love the Manchester City fans.

"When I think about the trophies we have won and the way we have played our football during my time here, I couldn't imagine playing anywhere else."

Hugo Viana, City's director of football, said Dias is "a leader in the dressing room and on the pitch". He is set to play against Spurs having partnered John Stones at center-back on the opening weekend of the season.

Manchester City is likely to try and secure the futures of John Stones and Bernardo Silva in the coming months. Both have under one year left on their deals as things stand.

Ilkay Gundogan and Ederson also both have less than 12 months remaining on their contracts, meanwhile, and Rodri, Foden, Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake all have two years to go. Defender Rico Lewis, however, is thought to be close to signing a new five-year deal.

Liverpool.com says: There are several reasons why Manchester City will be a fascinating watch this season. Guardiola's side was very poor last season by its own standards but has since spent big to revamp its roster.

It also freshened up its coaching team with the arrival of Pep Lijnders, the former assistant to Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool. That is a really interesting appointment and it will be really intriguing to see how he adapts things in Manchester.
