Piatek reflects honestly on time at ‘dream club’ Milan: “Best period of my career”

Krzysztof Piątek hopes that AC Milan get the better of Napoli on Sunday night, reflecting on his time at the club too.

Piatek exploded onto the scene in Italy after moving to Genoa, and he was snapped up by Milan for €35m. He continued his red-hot form with six goals in his first five games for the club, then Marco Giampaolo’s arrival seemed to mark the beginning of the end, as did Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s arrival.

In the end, the Polish forward moved to German club Hertha BSC who paid over €24m to land him. He would end up back in Italy with Salernitana and has bounced around clubs, doing better for İstanbul Başakşehir and then heading to Qatari side Al-Duhail in the summer for €10m.

Best period of my career’

Piatek gave an interview to Diretta Flashscore about the memories that he has from his time at Milan, with his comments relayed by Calciomercato.com.

Does Milan-Napoli bring back memories?

“Of course! That great match we played in the Coppa Italia, where I scored two goals, a 2-0 win. I hope it ends the same way this time too.”

What are your memories of Milan?

“Definitely only in a positive way, because it’s a dream club. I’ve always been a Milan fan, and being able to wear their shirt and play at San Siro has been a dream since I was a child. I’ll always have wonderful memories of that period, never negative ones.

“Even though there were some bad moments, in the end, I’ll always remember that as the best period of my career because I played for the club I wanted since I was a kid, and I can’t say anything bad about it.

“Of course, the ending could have gone differently; perhaps I could have reacted better, because I was young and didn’t have much experience. The club could have made different choices, too; that’s how it went. That’s the past, and I can only speak well of Milan because it’s a great club.”

The club paid €70m for you and Lucas Paqueta…

“It’s such a big club that you have to get results right away, you have to do well right away, because at any moment they can replace you and bring in two more players for another €70m. It’s never been a problem for them, and the pressure is enormous because it’s one of the biggest clubs in the world, that’s the truth.

“As I say, maybe I could have reacted differently; in the end, the pressure was so high that I could have burned myself out, or the club could have handled it better. Anyway, that’s how it went. Paquetá and I certainly don’t regret our choice because we played at a big club.

“As you can see, they still have problems with strikers. They change players often and can’t find someone who plays and scores for five or six years. Because it’s not easy.”

You played alongside Donnarumma…

“Gigio… I’ve worked with a lot of goalkeepers, but he’s one of the best in the world, without a doubt. He’s incredibly strong between the posts, he’s dynamic. Given his size, it’s hard to find a goalkeeper so agile on the line. I’ve always had a great relationship with him.

“We even said hello recently on social media, so for me, he’s one of the best. I’m happy he won the Champions League with Paris Saint-Germain, that he received the award for best goalkeeper, because he truly is the best and deserves it.”
