Piers Morgan's old Mohamed Salah tweets resurface which say everything about Liverpool star

1 hour ago 28

Piers Morgan once claimed that Mohamed Salah was better than Cristiano Ronaldo in 2018 after the Egyptian eclipsed his Premier League record.

Morgan has shared a close friendship with Ronaldo for some time, and the broadcaster often defends him on social media. Morgan has also firmly declared that Ronaldo is ahead of Lionel Messi in the 'GOAT' debate and claimed that Diego Maradona is the best Argentinian soccer player.

While Salah hasn't been his usual self this season under head coach Arne Slot, Morgan did admit that the Liverpool star was better than Ronaldo. However, Morgan specifically referenced the Premier League and continues to argue that Ronaldo is the greatest soccer player of all time.

When Liverpool signed Salah for $48 million from AS Roma, fans weren't sure how he would cope at Anfield. Salah previously played for Chelsea, but struggled to deal with the physicality of the Premier League earlier in his career.

Those doubting Salah were quickly converted, as he scored 32 Premier League goals in his first season for Liverpool, surpassing Ronaldo's best return for Manchester United. During the 2007-08 Premier League season, Ronaldo scored 31 goals.

At the time, former Premier League stars Andy Cole and Alan Shearer shared the single-season record after scoring 34 goals. However, back then, there were 42 games in a season, rather than the 38 games we see in modern times.

Cole and Shearer were both center forwards, making Ronaldo and Salah's record even more impressive as wingers. Morgan admitted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that Salah was now clear of Ronaldo.

"Congrats @MoSalah - most goals (32) ever scored in a 38-game Premier League season," Morgan wrote. "This making him officially better than @Cristiano was at United. I rest my case."

Salah is no longer the record holder after 38 Premier League games, as Manchester City striker Erling Haaland scored 36 goals during the 2022-23 season. Still, Salah leads his fellow wingers.

Morgan has backtracked on Ronaldo since becoming acquainted with the soccer star, after calling him a "brat" in the past. In 2008, Morga wrote a column slamming Ronaldo for being "spoiled" before he left United for Real Madrid.

Ronaldo and Morgan are now friends and have conducted several interviews together. "You see them for what they really are. And I now see him as a very different character," Morgan said of Ronaldo.

"To me, he's a stand-up guy. He's been a very loyal friend, to a lot of people. He's a great family guy and is a brilliant football player."

Morgan even heaped praise on Ronaldo and played down Messi's talents in the process. "For me you are the GOAT, for me Messi is not even the Argentinian GOAT. Maradona was better than him," Morgan told Ronaldo.
