Stefano Pioli will return to San Siro as an opponent on Sunday as his struggling Fiorentina side take on AC Milan.
For Milan, the aim will be to rack up a fifth league victory in seven games and continue a strong start under Massimiliano Allegri. Having emerged from games against Napoli and Juventus before the break with four points, belief is high that a title charge could really happen.
However, there have been a number of injury blows during the international break. Star duo Christian Pulisic and Adrien Rabiot will definitely be out, while Pervis Estupinan and Alexis Saelemaekers are doubts.
Pioli’s presser
Fiorentina meanwhile are winless in six league games, so Pioli is under pressure. He spoke at a press conference two days before the game which took place at Viola Park. The Italian previewed the game and his return to face his old side, with TMW relaying his words.
How do you feel about your return to San Siro?
“I would have liked to return to San Siro another time, but right now I’m not thinking about the emotions that will inevitably come. I’m focused on our moment, even though I experienced some wonderful emotions there.”

What do you expect from the players you will be reunited with?
“I’ve shared an important journey with the lads. It’ll be exciting to meet them, but I’ll think about it after the match. I have too many things to prepare first.
“I’ll experience what happens on Sunday, but it’s not a priority. I’ll play 500 games, and the next day I’ll turn 60, if there is a football God… (laughs).”
If you could solve one problem for Fiorentina, what would it be?
“We’re missing a win, that’s all. In our minds, we’re missing points. Defeats make us lose confidence and self-esteem. We’re privileged people, but we have soul, and we all want to give something back.
“Victories don’t come by chance. I’m sure we’ll get out of this situation; the team’s commitment and unity give me confidence.”
You’ll face Allegri again…
“Max is a great coach and is doing a great job. They have strong, well-rounded players. They have quick, agile players.
“The numbers speak for themselves, and they’ve conceded more than the numbers suggest. We prepared for the match, taking into account the situations that could put them in trouble.”
How do you limit Modric?
“I met him two years ago on vacation. Seeing him play at this age with this consistency shows what a champion he is. We’ll try to limit him.”
