Player Ratings: AC Milan 1-0 Lazio – Maignan does it again; Leao steps up

1 week ago 24

AC Milan just about clinched all three points against Lazio on Saturday evening. Mike Maignan and Rafael Leao played big parts in the matter, and below are the player ratings for the Rossoneri.

If you haven’t already, make sure to check out how we decide the player ratings. From the scale to what affects the rating, we have compiled everything there.

Starting XI

Maignan (8 – MOTM): He followed up on the brilliance against Inter with a wonderful save just two minutes into the game, showcasing outstanding reflexes. Easily the MOTM for me, even if he wasn’t called into action loads after that, as the save was world-class.

Tomori (6.5): The Englishman was carded early on but managed to remain composed enough to avoid a second. He got the assist for the goal with a nice cross, after a nice run down the right flank, but I think he needed to do better in the 1v1s (especially against Zaccagni) for a 7. Or did he deserve a 7 anyway?

Gabbia (7): Mr right place right time. He cleared many crosses this evening and also had some crucial last-ditch interventions, including one on Isaksen which would have been a 1v1 with the keeper if it hadn’t been for a brilliant tackle. Once again, he’s a fantastic leader for this defence.

Pavlovic (6): The last minutes almost turned disastrous for him, but at least in my opinion, it would have been shocking to award that penalty. That said, Pavlovic lost Gila in the box just before Maignan’s brilliant save, and he was just decent overall.

Saelemaekers (6): Some good moments, some poor ones. The Belgian certainly continued to show that he means a lot in Allegri’s 3-5-2, running up and down the flank tirelessly, but perhaps he lacked a little end product today (at least to get a higher rating).

Fofana (6): Bear with me here. It was definitely a frustrating display from the Frenchman, as he won back the ball a lot but failed completely in possession (the amazing run and missed shot was the perfect example os his season). However, he did well on the goal, being part of the triangle combination on the right.

Modric (6): The veteran lost possession a few more times than usual, and also had some misplaced passes, but ultimately he did enough to call this an average display. It was definitely nice to see him get stuck in towards the end, sending Pedro to the ground.

Rabiot (6): By his standards, it was a decent performance but nothing to brag about. The feeling is that he could have been even more decisive in possession, both in terms of creating chances for himself and attempting more difficult passes.

Bartesaghi (6.5): He continues to grow, doing well in possession and taking on the duels with great strength. We also saw some good crosses from him tonight, so Estupinan will surely be a bit worried about his role in this team.

Nkunku (5): At times during the game, I asked myself if he was even on the pitch. He was completely ice cold, and I obviously don’t mean that in a good way, as he struggled massively to get into the game. So far, he hasn’t proved that he can play in a front two.

Leao (7): Not to suggest that he was super lively in possession, because he wasn’t, but he showed striker’s instinct with the winning goal. The only complaint is that he should have done that more, because Milan did have chances to cross. He also worked hard in the pressing phase, which was nice to see. The goal obviously weighs heavily for the rating here.

Substitutes

Loftus-Cheek (6): He used his size very well in the duels and also had a couple of runs into the box. It would be interesting to see him from start in the next game.

Ricci (N/A): Apart from shielding the ball in the dying seconds, as well as picking up a yellow card, he didn’t really have time to do much. As such, no rating for him today.

The manager

Allegri (6.5): The starting eleven made sense, with Fofana being the only question mark (as always), and Milan came away with all three points in the end. That said, the first half was very poor as something didn’t click tactically, while the second half was better but not brilliant by any means. Maybe his outburst affected the VAR decision…
