Player Ratings: AC Milan 1-1 Genoa – Gabbia, Fofana and Leao struggle massively

AC Milan dropped two important points in their game against Genoa, which is a big let-down despite the late equaliser. Several players struggled to reach their usual level and below are the ratings for the Rossoneri.

If you haven’t already, make sure to check out how we decide the player ratings. From the scale to what affects the rating, we have compiled everything there.

Starting XI

Maignan (6): He couldn’t do anything about the goal, left alone but his defenders, and he did well on other occasions to collect the ball. As such, he definitely did enough to get a 6 here, especially if you want to include the penalty delaying in the verdict.

Tomori (6): On the goal, it wasn’t really his fault, and on the penalty he had to run over from the other side. Overall, I think he handled his defensive duties well and also helped in attack with his movement on the right-hand side.

Gabbia (4): It was shocking defending on the goal, there is no other way to describe it. He looked distracted, trying to direct his teammates, and lost his footing too. Super easy for his former teammate Colombo. It ended up being so costly for the Rossoneri.

Pavlovic (6): He may have lost the duel with Colombo in the build-up to the goal (nearly a foul btw), but he gets a 6 here for his involvement in attack. Yes, some moments could have been better, but he had the cross for Pulisic’s sweet left-footed strike and also had other good contributions.

Saelemaekers (5): Rough night for the Belgian, as it’s difficult to even recall anything he did in the game. He was shut down completely by the Genoa defence and also had some dodgy moments on the edge of Milan’s box.

Fofana (4.5): If a player is always unlucky and always nearly gets things right, what does that tell us? Clearly, the Frenchman cannot keep making excuses, the simple fact is that he isn’t good enough to be a starter for Milan at this time. If he had scored that open-net chance, the game could have been completely different.

Modric (5.5): If we look at work-rate and involvement, you could argue he still did his duties as the defensive midfielder, but he probably could have been more precise on the edge of the box by his standards. We have to remember that while he hit the corner for the goal, it was deflected by a Genoa defender to Leao.

Rabiot (6): It ended up being more a case of hard work for him tonight, with fewer contributions on the ball. That said, as Milan really pushed for it towards the end, he was one of the players who had the ball the most. Only just about a 6 here because in truth, he also could have done better by his standards.

Bartesaghi (5.5): The penalty call was probably right, but it can be questioned as the Genoa man wasn’t in control of the ball. The Milan man simply entered that situation in the wrong way. Anyway, it affects his rating because it could have been costly, but we also have to highlight his good crossing tonight (which keeps the rating from disaster).

Pulisic (6): He was unlucky not to get a goal tonight, not so much because of the handball call but more so the fantastic shot saved by Leali, and the various blocked efforts. It still wasn’t his best game, so I cannot be too generous with the rating, but he definitely did enough for a pass.

Leao (6): If it hadn’t been for that goal, his rating probably would have been a 5 or maybe even a 4.5, as he looked really bad at times. Losing possession, making the wrong decisions, looking disinterested and so on. Then again, the goal meant Milan kept their unbeaten run going and clinched an important point (even if disappointing now).

Substitutes

Loftus-Cheek (5.5): He did better than Fofana in that role, but he was way too rough in his movements, both in possession and when trying to win aerial duels. In short, his substitution didn’t have the desired effect.

Fullkrug (6): Since Genoa practically sat back with everything, it was a difficult situation but the German had some good flicks. He also came close to scoring, but the effort was blocked at the last second.

Athekame (5.5): Like Loftus-Cheek, this was a substitution that didn’t really give Milan anything. It was more so a way to move to a four-man backline, but the Swiss international could have done better on the ball too.

The manager

Allegri (5.5): All of the substitutions made sense up until Athekame. Sure, he wanted to switch to a 4-3-3 or something along those lines, but Milan needed a player who could make an impact there and then. And while the Rossoneri did create chances this time out, Allegri couldn’t stop the obvious tactics from De Rossi.
