Player Ratings: Atalanta 1-1 AC Milan – Ricci relief but Gimenez worry grows

1 day ago 35

AC Milan failed to bounce back from the draw against Pisa, clinching just one point against Atalanta this evening. Several players failed to impress and below are the ratings for the Rossoneri.

If you haven’t already, make sure to check out how we decide the player ratings. From the scale to what affects the rating, we have compiled everything there.

Starting XI

Maignan (6.5): He was beaten at the near post, which has been his main weakness in the past, but it was a very good finish by Lookman to be fair. In any case, the Frenchman made a great save on Zappacosta at the end to help Milan clinch one point.

Tomori (5.5): The Englishman could have done better on the goal, as he stepped up instead of covering Lookman, even though it wasn’t really necessary. He also mistimed a ball which led to Zappacosta’s big chance at the end, so not ideal.

Gabbia (6): It looked like he was late on the first goal but in reality, many things went wrong in the defence and he was left scrambling. He was very solid overall so despite the conceded goal, he deserves a pass here.

Pavlovic (6): Another decent display from the Serbian, with good defending and some good moments in attack. If there’s anything to complain about, it’s that he could have been a bit more composed in possession when moving forward.

Saelemaekers (5.5): We saw some encouraging moments, twists and turns, in the build-up phase tonight. However, his defending on the goal was simply too poor as he kept Lookman onside. In attack, he also squandered a big chance towards the end. It doesn’t matter how much you create if the chances almost always break down in the end anyway.

Fofana (5): The ‘extraordinary’ potential Allegri talked about before the game wasn’t really something we saw. The first half was incredibly poor in many ways, such as his passing and movement, not to mention the decision-making. Slightly better in the first half, with two good chances created, but still not where Milan need him to be.

Modric (5.5): Sadly, it was inarguably the Croatian’s worst game with the Milan shirt. The passing was very sloppy, especially in the first half, and one poor pass came just before Atalanta’s goal. On top of that, he never really got into the game in terms of the build-up.

Ricci (6.5 – MOTM): He got a bit lucky with the deflection, but at least he dared to take the shot rather than trying to play it safe. It felt like he was a bit bolder in other moments as well, and his movement was certainly better. He also covered the most distance out of any player, so a well-deserved MOTM here.

Bartesaghi (5.5): The youngster could have done a lot better with his crossing tonight, even if we got to see a good one for Loftus-Cheek. He wasn’t overly convincing in possession either, while committing some fouls at the back.

Gimenez (4.5): He wasn’t best friends with the ball, that much is clear. In fact, how he moved and interacted with the play hindered Milan’s build-up a lot, as we saw when he came off. This is indeed getting a bit worrying now.

Leao (5.5): The No.10 wasn’t necessarily bad bad, but based on the 45 minutes we got to see, he didn’t have much success in the counter-attacking opportunities that Milan had. The early sub felt a little strange, but he also didn’t show loads in the first half.

Substitutes

Nkunku (5): It might sound harsh, but if he’s to compete with Leao and Pulisic this season, then he better step up. Tonight, we saw a player who – in many ways – was afraid of making a difference and often took the easy way out. That’s exactly what Milan didn’t need.

Loftus-Cheek (6.5): Without a doubt, it was a fantastic appearance off the bench. He immediately added energy and strength to Milan’s game, combining with his teammates in clever ways and bursting forward with power. Really nice to see.

Athekame (N/A): I didn’t see enough to give him a rating.

The manager

Allegri (5.5): In my eyes, the gaffer didn’t do enough to wake up his team. It felt like Atalanta’s goal was coming in the first half as Milan sat very low, which is something he shouldn’t have allowed. On top of that, in hindsight, the Leao substitution didn’t turn out great with Gimenez’s injury and all.
