Player Ratings: Pisa 1-2 AC Milan – Modric maestro and mixed substitutes

AC Milan clinched all three points away at Pisa and Luka Modric played a key role in the win, scoring late on. Below are the player ratings for the Rossoneri.

If you haven’t already, make sure to check out how we decide the player ratings. From the scale to what affects the rating, we have compiled everything there.

Starting XI

Maignan (6): He couldn’t do much about the goal, considering it was wide open in the heart of the defence, but he made a good save in the first half from close range. Replays showed it was offside, but he didn’t know that at the time.

Tomori (5.5): I think he’s definitely a player who could have done better in both phases. On the goal, his positioning wasn’t exactly ideal for the ball over the top and in attack, there were only a few good combinations from his side.

Gabbia (6): In the end, he made enough clearances and blocks that he deserves a pass here, but questions can be asked about the whole defence on the goal. His positioning also wasn’t always brilliant.

Pavlovic (7): He won the penalty – that Fullkrug missed – with a trademark run into the box. On top of that, I think he defended very well in most situations, even on the goal when he followed his man, got to the ball and did what he could do.

Athekame (7): Allegri must work on his confidence a lot more, because the youngster sometimes inexplicably struggles in the 1v1s, but there’s no denying his crossing abilities. Once again, he sent a wonderful cross in the box for the first goal. He also had some nice tackles in defence.

Fofana (6): He had some strong moments, above all in the defence phase, and one interception in particular stands out to me (tracking back at high speed, cleanly winning it back). Then again, he can still be more concrete in attack and quicker with his passing.

Modric (8 – MOTM): The reality is that it wasn’t the best performance from him, with more misplaced passes and lost balls than usual. However, the goal means so much for Milan and it was a proper take the bull by the horns moment. So so important, and he was also good apart from the aforementioned mistakes.

Rabiot (6): He was his usual self for most of the game, which was really good and super important for Milan, especially when he somehow managed to keep hold of possession. The yellow card meant he was always going to miss the Como game, but he should have known better not to make it a red. Now, that means two games out at least.

Bartesaghi (6): We saw some good crossing from him, even if the attackers often didn’t find the right positions inside the box, and he was definitely okay in the build-up. Nothing too special from him tonight, though.

Loftus-Cheek (7.5): Very important header to give Milan the lead, picking up a great position inside the box and doing everything right with the finish. He continued to show strength in possession throughout the game, following the instructions I imagine that Allegri gave to him.

Nkunku (6): While he didn’t get a goal or an assist, it wasn’t exactly a super quiet 45 minutes from him either. He was involved early on and put Pisa in some tricky situations at times, so the confidence is clearly growing.

Substitutes

Fullkrug (5): He missed the penalty, hitting the outside of the post, and was also subbed off in the dying minutes of the game. I don’t need to say much more really, because that says it all.

Ricci (7): His impact was just what Milan needed, as he not only put in a good shift (like Fofana) but also made his way into the box several times, trying to push his teammates forward constantly. The one-two with Modric was even more impressive because he had to battle for the ball.

Leao (6): Perhaps similarly to Nkunku, he at least put the Pisa defence under some pressure with his presence and touches in and around the box.

Pulisic (6): We didn’t see a huge amount from him, by virtue of the fact that he came on late, but he didn’t exactly look sluggish on the ball (good news) and helped created some chances.

De Winter (N/A): I didn’t see enough to give him a rating.

The manager

Allegri (6.5): I fully agreed with the starting eleven, especially since a tough game is scheduled for Wednesday, and there were some impactful subs in the second half. That said, Nkunku perhaps deserved a little more time instead of Fullkrug (easy to say in hindsight, I know).
