It ended up being a very frustrating game at San Siro as Sassuolo snatched a point from AC Milan, who seemed destined for three points after another comeback. Below are the player ratings for the Rossoneri.
If you haven’t already, make sure to check out how we decide the player ratings. From the scale to what affects the rating, we have compiled everything there.
Starting XI
Maignan (6): Questions can perhaps be asked on the first goal, but at least in my opinion, that was more a good finish than anything. He made a good stop just before Sassuolo’s second goal which, by the way, he could do nothing about.
Tomori (5.5): This one may sound harsh, seeing as the Englishman did really well in attack on the overlap and also defended well for most of the game, but he switched off in the crucial moment. He absolutely should have picked up Lauriente’s run and since he didn’t, it was an easy goal.
Gabbia (5.5): It’s a similar story for the Italian, as despite trying to hold off Pinamonti, he should have done better in the second phase of that attack to stop Kone. He just didn’t look like his usual self, also missing a good chance in attack.

Pavlovic (5.5): Same score for the Serbian and the reasoning is very simple. He should have done even more against Kone, instead of just pushing up and then deciding not to commit. The pass for Nkunku was good before Bartesaghi’s second, but the defending must be done better first of all.
Saelemaekers (5.5): We can say what we want about his work-rate and versatility, but the fact is that he wasn’t particularly successful with his crosses today, nor did he succeed when he tried to shoot himself. Above all, however, he could have done much better defensively on Sassuolo’s second goal.
Loftus-Cheek (7): It was a lovely assist for Milan’s first goal from him, sending a low-driven ball in the box, and he used his size really well all game to preserve possession. He nearly got a goal as well (looked like it was potentially going in), but the offside-man Rabiot decided it was too risky and got a touch on it.
Modric (5.5): You could argue he was involved in the first goal with the pass to RLC, but the latter did 98% of the work. Sadly, there were far too many mistakes by the Croatian today and he will be the first to tell us that. By his standards, I would definitely say it was subpar.
Rabiot (5.5): He worked hard and often made himself available but man oh man did he struggle with his composure. In the first half, he was the one who lost the ball before the first goal and then, he missed a stunning chance to equalise. In the second, he got a touch to RLC’s header that was potentially going in anyway, making it offside.
Bartesaghi (8.5 – MOTM): He was the best for Milan, without a doubt, showcasing impressive finishing with two great strikes. It’s just a shame that his teammates committed far too many individual mistakes and thus threw the game away.

Pulisic (6): It wasn’t a Torino-esque impact from him, let’s make that clear, with some missed through balls and not that many involvements in front of goal. However, his 3-1 goal (again, right place, right time) really should have stood and it could have made all the difference.
Nkunku (6): I would be getting ahead of myself if I said it was a massive improvement, but he at least showed something with a great touch before Bartesaghi’s second, turning and setting up the Italian. He was also more involved overall.
Substitutes
De Winter (6): I don’t think there was necessarily anything wrong with his defending, as most of the errors were made on the flank or before the ball even got to him.
Ricci (6): He added some composure on the ball in the final part of the game and also pressed well in defence.
Athekame (N/A): I didn’t see enough to give him a rating today.
The manager
Allegri (6): Milan lost this game because of individual mistakes and questionable refereeing, not because of the tactics. The only thing you can question is Pulisic coming off but I’m sure the gaffer had a reason, and it’s not like that sub changed the face of the game.
