The Premier League has explained why it awarded Manchester City a penalty in the first half of Sunday's game against Liverpool, following an official VAR review.
City winger Jeremy Doku capitalized on a defensive error and drove into the penalty area, and was clipped by Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. City still had two efforts at the Liverpool goal as the ball stayed in play, but VAR suggested that referee Chris Kavanagh review the incident on the pitchside monitor.
Following a lengthy analysis, Kavanagh awarded the penalty, which sparked protests as Liverpool argued the touch was extremely slight, and that City continued the attack after Doku was brought down. Mamardashvili made amends by saving the resulting spot kick, but the Premier League has provided context to the incident.
"After review, the referee overturned the original decision of no penalty to Manchester City," the Premier League wrote on X. "Referee announcement: 'After review, the goalkeeper commits a foul challenge on the attacker, the final decision is penalty.'"
