Following the UEFA Super Cup heartbreak earlier this season, Tottenham Hotspur once again face Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain in Paris on Wednesday.
This week was supposed to tell us a lot about Thomas Frank and his team, with Spurs having to deal with two of Europe’s toughest sides, Arsenal and PSG, in the space of four days. And plenty has already been said after their 4-1 defeat against Arsenal in the North London Derby at the weekend.
It was their first away defeat of the season, but more worrying was the performance itself. Spurs created just 0.07 xG, their weakest creative display across an entire decade, and it feels as if the bar keeps dropping every week.
From sitting comfortably in the top four, Spurs now find themselves down in 11th, with only 3 wins from their last 11 matches in all competitions.
Europe, though, has treated them far more kindly, as their return to the Champions League after two seasons away has been pretty decent, with Tottenham one of only five unbeaten clubs in this year’s competition so far. They sit 10th in the league phase with 2 wins and 2 draws, albeit without having faced a genuine European heavyweight.
That, however, changes on Wednesday. PSG come into this with the same sharpness they carried for most of last season. It may not be the exact level they showed at their attacking best, but they are still among the strongest teams in Europe.
They’ve just beaten Lyon and Le Havre in the Ligue 1, though they did suffer their first Champions League defeat of the season in a 2-1 loss to Bayern Munich before the international break that saw them drop to 5th.

PSG vs Tottenham Hotspur: Head to head record
These two sides only met a few months ago in August in the UEFA Super Cup, Thomas Frank’s first competitive match in charge. Tottenham, surprisingly, looked set to win it as they were 2 goals up with 5 minutes left, but collapsed late on and eventually lost 4-3 on penalties.
Before that, their only other meeting came in the Champions Cup back in 2017, where Spurs were comfortable 4-2 winners.
Tottenham team news
Tottenham had some welcome returns in the North London Derby, with Mohammed Kudus, Randal Kolo Muani, Pape Sarr, Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall all back in the squad. The latter two didn’t feature, but their availability is still a boost.
There is no firm timeline yet on Dominic Solanke‘s return, and we believe it’s unlikely he will play a part. Ben Davies remains out with a hamstring injury, and Brennan Johnson is unavailable after his red card in the 4-1 win against Copenhagen.
PSG team news
PSG are dealing with a few significant absentees. Achraf Hakimi and Desire Doue are out, while Ousmane Dembele has not played since the defeat to Bayern Munich and remains a doubt for this match.
Predicted Tottenham line up
Vicario, Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie, Palhinha, Simons, Sarr, Kudus, Richarlison, Odobert.
The last time these sides met, Thomas Frank went with a back five, using Kevin Danso as a third centre back. It worked brilliantly on the day, but when he tried the same shape against Arsenal at the weekend, it was a complete disaster, stalling Spurs’ build-up and killing any hope of counterattacks. There’s still a genuine chance he goes back to it here.
In midfield, Joao Palhinha was Spurs’ standout performer in an otherwise dire display against Arsenal, so he should keep his place. Xavi Simons and Pape Sarr are expected to start too, with Rodrigo Bentancur likely dropping out.
Up front, Kolo Muani, on loan from PSG, is eligible to face his parent club and could come in for either Odobert or Richarlison.
Our prediction
Bradley Barcola is PSG’s top scorer this season and arrives in outrageous form. Spurs have just conceded a hat trick to Eberechi Eze, so watching how they cope with Barcola’s footwork and movement will be a storyline on its own.
At the other end, Spurs badly missed a creative No. 10 at the weekend. That makes Xavi Simons, facing his old club, a key figure. If Spurs are going to create anything meaningful, a lot of it will have to run through him.
There were some uncomfortable questions thrown at Thomas Frank after the Arsenal defeat, and his post-match comments didn’t exactly calm the fanbase. The pressure is firmly on the Dane now, but a win here would ease a lot of that tension.
Predicted score: PSG 1-2 Tottenham Hotspur.
