Real Madrid gets revenge on Liverpool after Champions League defeat as transfer 'agreed'

1 hour ago 39

Dayot Upamecano, the highly-rated center-back, has reportedly reached a verbal agreement to join Spanish giants Real Madrid. This news comes as Bayern Munich's director of sport, Max Eberl, hinted that the defender's agent is receiving calls from interested clubs.

Liverpool had previously been linked with Upamecano after missing out on Marc Guehi during the summer transfer window. A proposed $46 million move for the England defender fell through on deadline day when Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish called off the deal.

Upamecano's name has been floated around as a potential alternative to Guehi, who will become a free agent at the end of this season.

However, according to Foot Mercato, the French international has verbally agreed to make the switch to Los Blancos next summer.

The center-back's current contract expires at the end of the season, meaning he could depart Bayern Munich on a free transfer after five years with the club.

Eberl has conceded: "It's normal if other clubs are calling his agents, it's part of the game. I've already said that we want to do our best and get new contract done. We are on it."

Liverpool triumphed over Real Madrid in the Champions League at Anfield on Tuesday night.

Alexis Mac Allister netted the only goal of the match after 61 minutes, heading home from Dominik Szoboszlai's precise free-kick.

Trent Alexander-Arnold was brought on as a late substitute, much to the displeasure of the Liverpool faithful, who greeted him with a chorus of boos.

Following the match, head coach Arne Slot commented: "Impressive, because we played against an incredible side, a team that is in an unbelievable run of form - only lost once, won all the other games.

"If you then can win against them, but also with the performance we had, that's very positive. But apart from everything we can say, we beat them because of a set-piece.

"It's nicer to talk about this if you win because if you lose, people come up with that I try to find excuses.

"But a positive set-piece balance is the minimum you need to get a result nine out of 10 times, and that's what we had today."
