Reece James steps up, VAR controversy: The story of Chelsea's fightback against Newcastle

3 hours ago 4

The match at St. James' Park on Saturday afternoon, where Newcastle hosted Chelsea, was a classic tale of two halves. The Magpies quickly took a two-goal lead, seemingly overpowering the visitors with their assertive play both on and off the ball.

Nick Woltemade found the back of the net twice with two composed finishes, capitalising on a pair of crosses to seize control of the game. The hosts could've furthered their lead, but were unable to do so, leaving the door open for Enzo Maresca's side to force their way back in.

The second half saw a rejuvenated Chelsea emerge from the dressing room, as Reece James clawed his side back into contention with a superb free-kick. There was VAR controversy shortly afterwards when Anthony Gordon seemed to be fouled by Trevoh Chalobah, but referee Andy Madley and the VAR dismissed the protests.

Chelsea then equalised through Joao Pedro, igniting a frenzied period of play. A back-and-forth contest ensued, with both sides having chances to snatch all three points, but it wasn't meant to be.

So, with that said, here's a look at the story of the game in pictures.
