Santiago Gimenez was ultimately able to celebrate Mexico’s Gold Cup triumph, but there was certainly a bit of pain along the way.
Mexico won their tenth CONCACAF Gold Cup title overnight, beating the United States 2-1 in the final played at NRG in Houston and securing bragging rights for Gimenez. However, there is worrying news at AC Milan regarding the condition of the ex-Feyenoord man.
According to Alfredo Pedulla, the striker has suffered a possible fracture in a finger. The USA goal scorer Chris Richards stepped on his left hand, causing what could be a break to the middle finger and draw an obvious yelp of discomfort.
The images of the incident were immediately shocking, and the Mexican bench intervened quickly. The finger was straightened and immobilised with an emergency bandage, while the player showed clear signs of pain.
MilanNews meanwhile report that fortunately, after a few moments of fear, Gimenez returned to the field and finished the game. He eventually celebrated with his team-mates the conquest of the prestigious trophy.
While waiting for medical tests, the injury seems less serious than expected, although it cannot be ruled out that the player will have to undergo further tests to rule out complications. If the break is bad enough, corrective may be required.
