There is more bad news on the Santiago Gimenez front, as the striker might need to undergo surgery on his ankle.

As MilanNews write, Gimenez has been absent from the team for 47 days. The Mexican was taken off on October 28th during the second half of Atalanta 1-1 Milan, due to a recurrence of the ankle problem he had already suffered in the summer while on international duty for the Gold Cup.

Surgery possible

The problem can be considered serious, given the length of the injury and Gimenez’s subsequent absence from the squad. To further clarify the situation, the player also traveled to Holland to undergo a specialist examination to further analyse the issue.

The report adds that surgery to permanently resolve the injury has not been ruled out, but each scenario will be thoroughly evaluated by the player together with Milan. No decision has yet been made regarding the path to follow.

As a result though Gimenez will not board the flight that will take the squad to Saudi Arabia tomorrow for the Supercoppa Italiana. The former Feyenoord man – like Matteo Gabbia – will remain at Milanello to continue an individual program. Both Youssouf Fofana and Rafael Leao will travel however.

Fabrizio Romano meanwhile writes: “AC Milan staff and Santiago Giménez, on the verge of decision to proceed with surgery following ankle problems. Mexican striker could proceed with surgery shortly as he’s been out in the recent weeks. Milan are in talks for Füllkrug as new striker, as reported.”
