Ricci discusses box-to-box role and Roma’s pressure: “That wasn’t our tactical idea”

Samuele Ricci felt certain that AC Milan would see out the win against Roma, but he believes it is still a good draw away from home.

Milan spent pretty much the entire first half penned into their own box as Roma wasted multiple chances. Yet, in the second half, when Luka Modric whipped in a gorgeous cross for Koni De Winter to head home and make it 0-1, it looked like another Max Allegri masterclass.

The lead wasn’t to last for too long though, as Davide Bartesaghi was penalised for a handball and Lorenzo Pellegrini scored from the spot to earn an eventual 1-1 draw. Mike Maignan has already voiced his disapproval regarding the decision, believing that Bartesaghi had nowhere to put his arm.

Ricci’s Roma reaction

Ricci spoke to Sky and TeleLombardia after the full-time whistle to offer his assessments after a third draw in the last five games for Milan. His comments were relayed by MilanNews.

How do you feel after a game like that?

“It’s a good point, on a difficult pitch. In the first half, we conceded too much, partly due to our own errors in pushing up the pitch and building the game. They scored in the second half, but that’s fair enough. Mike saved us on many occasions.”

You played in a mezzala role, do you feel comfortable?

“Definitely yes. Last year I often played as a regista but I can also play as a mezzala. I try to contribute in the possession and dribbling phase.”

What was the first-half approach about?

“It’s never good to be all locked in your own penalty area. They did well too, but that wasn’t our tactical idea tonight.”

A draw isn’t a bad result, but did you also think you could take the spoils?

“Yes, given the way things were going. From the pitch, I thought we’d take it home because I didn’t see any danger in their play. Then there was the penalty incident, while in the first half we conceded too much while they were much more dangerous.”

This trust has created new characteristics and a new spirit in you…

“From the beginning, I’ve always tried to give my all in training, with a positive and fair attitude, which also leads to raising the level of training. At the beginning, I found a little less space, now the coach is using me as a mezzala.

“I’m a different midfielder than Rabiot, who is a pure mezzala, but I definitely try to give my contribution and I still have many things to improve on.”

Where are Milan looking? Up towards Inter or over your shoulders at the chasing pack??

“The goal we set ourselves from the start, which is to bring the club back to the Champions League. That’s the important thing, then whatever comes…will come. It’s a tough competition, there are so many strong teams.

“I don’t remember a season with so many teams fighting up there. In any case, we’re doing well, we’re having consistency, but we still need to improve on certain things. We’re on the right path.”
