Liverpool is reportedly gearing up to challenge Manchester City for the signature of Antoine Semenyo, whose release clause is set to be activated in the coming days.

The Bournemouth ace has been a standout performer in the Premier League this season, netting nine goals, including a brace against the Reds at Anfield. Now, he's being tipped for a move to one of the country's elite clubs with City confident of striking a deal when the transfer window opens.

Until now, Liverpool has shown little interest in competing with City for Semenyo's services. However, the Daily Mail reports that sporting director Richard Hughes is contemplating another raid on his former club.

Hughes was instrumental in securing left-back Milos Kerkez last summer, and Liverpool are eager to bolster their attacking options. Semenyo fits the bill, and there's chatter about him potentially succeeding Mohamed Salah, who may depart in the near future.

Semenyo is keen to finalize his exit by January 1. Last week, the BBC reported that City's pursuit of the player is well underway following talks between his representatives and the club.

Another meeting between City and Semenyo's camp is scheduled for early this week, with hopes of reaching an agreement soon.

But until pen is put to paper, Semenyo's future remains uncertain, and Liverpool could capitalise on this opportunity, particularly given their struggles this season.

The Anfield outfit is among five clubs who have expressed interest in the Ghanaian player - along with City, Manchester United, Tottenham and Chelsea, though some have since withdrawn their interest.

Liverpool's interest could intensify due to the recent injury to Alexander Isak, but their extensive recruitment over the summer has resulted in a surplus of attacking options for Arne Slot, presenting a significant challenge.

Semenyo is keen to quickly settle his future, particularly as the release clause in his contract will expire on January 10. This means any interested club needs to move swiftly to avoid a protracted saga.

It's understood that Bournemouth would prefer to retain Semenyo for their first two matches of 2026 - against Arsenal on 3 January and Tottenham four days later - before consenting to his departure.

The player will prioritise a club he believes can offer him long-term opportunities to win trophies. Both City and Liverpool would meet this criterion.
