Andy Robertson joked it was good that Rio Ngumoha ignored him before netting Liverpool’s opening goal in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Fulham.

The teenager scored a delicious strike in the 36th minute of the game at Anfield, when he stood up Fulham defender Timothy Castagne, bamboozled the Belgian full-back inside the box and then managed to create a yard of space from which he bent a sublime shot into the far corner.

In doing so, Ngumoha became the youngest-ever league scorer for Liverpool at Anfield, and the goal was his second of the season following the dramatic injury-time winner against Newcastle in August.

But it could have been a different outcome had, instead of wriggling from one side to the other, he instead laid the ball to the onrushing Robertson.

“It was a special goal,” Ngumoha told Sky Sports after the game. “Robbo made the overlap,” he added, giggling alongside the Scotland captain. “But he created space for me and I just cut inside and aimed for the corner.”

Robertson, playing his first match since confirming his decision to leave Liverpool at the end of the campaign, handed Ngumoha the player of the match award and said the winger could go on to achieve extraordinary things at Liverpool.

“He was unbelievable,” said the left-back. “Just shows you, maybe sometimes don’t listen to the experienced players. I’m screaming to tell him I’m coming on the overlap but then he just goes and cuts inside.

“It was a great goal and a great performance from him. He just keeps learning, keeps listening. He is such a good kid. I’ll only tell him that on the cameras, not to his face,” Robertson joked.

“Him and Trey [Nyoni] are a pleasure to work with and they just listen to the older lads and you can see them improving all the time. He has a big future ahead of him, but the here and now is pretty good, too.”

Robertson’s name was chanted throughout the game at Anfield, as the 32-year-old begins his drawn-out farewell, and he reflected emotionally on the impact Liverpool has had on his life.

“Obviously, I knew my song would be sung a couple of times,” he said. “This club means everything to me.

“I have been here nine years; I was a boy one time - he [Ngumoha] might not believe me, but I was! Now I have become a man and this club has made me who I am today, so I owe them a lot.

“I am just going to try and enjoy and embrace every moment I have at this football club and when I get the start, I just try to enjoy it. Thankfully, the win was the most important thing today, and a clean sheet to go along with it.”
