Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has suggested that the Reds need to find a replacement for Fabinho in order to bring some stability back to their midfield.
He also recommended a Premier League winger as a potential target for manager Arne Slot.
Fabinho left Anfield for Saudi Arabia in 2023 after a challenging final season, but during his five-year stint with Liverpool, he won every competition he participated in.
That included key roles in the teams that clinched the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020. Over the course of his 2019 appearances for Liverpool, the Brazilian proved himself to be one of the game's top defensive midfielders, contributing 11 goals.
Despite Liverpool's continued success under Slot, Fowler believes that Fabinho's departure has left a gap in the team.
"I do think we need a Fabinho-type sitter in that park because as much as there are three fabulous players in there Mac Allister, Gravenberch and Szoboszlai, discipline would probably be the wrong phrase here 'cause I think they can do it," Fowler told Adventure Gamers.
"But you need that disciplined player to sort of sit there and try and control things. At times I think Liverpool have maybe been a bit too risky with the three midfielders going forward when it's probably not on.
"I think they do need that little bit of stability in front of that back four."
In addition to a new midfielder, Fowler also expressed his desire for Liverpool to pursue a winger in the upcoming transfer window.
Liverpool have been connected with Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo, who reportedly has an $85M release clause in his deal, yet Fowler has also identified another winger — and a particular favorite of Slot from his previous club Feyenoord — on the south coast, whom he believes the Reds might pursue.
"I saw Liverpool were linked with Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo," Fowler continued. "Yankuba Minteh has been very good for Brighton and that's the beauty of the Premier League.
"If you've got a player who's playing well and performing, you're going to get linked with other clubs. Would Brighton want him to go? No.
"Bournemouth won't want Semenyo to leave and Everton won't want Ndiaye to leave either.
"Salah's not going to be around forever, even though he's just signed a new contract. But anyone who Liverpool think can fit that bill, they're going to try and sign them."
