Rodrygo signs, £68m Eze deal, Simons hijack - Arsenal next transfer after Viktor Gyokeres

2 days ago 51

Arsenal have reached a verbal agreement to sign Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP with the Gunners set to pay just under £65million including add-ons for the striker.

After weeks of negotiations, the Gunners are now on course to land their priority target. Gyokeres will become the club's most high-profile signing of the summer, while Cristhian Mosquera is also expected to join Mikel Arteta's side.

It's expected that more business will play out between now and the end of the transfer window. Another attacker could sign to provide competition to Gabriel Martinelli on the left with Real Madrid's Rodrygo and Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze both on their radar.

But what should Arsenal's next move in the window be? football.london writers have their say on who the Gunners should target next...

Josh Holland

A striker and a midfielder were the priority for Arsenal at the start of the window and they have covered both bases already. The reality is now that any further incomings would be an added bonus for next season.

In a dream world, Arteta will welcome a new left-sided attacker to his squad. Martinelli didn't produce the numbers expected last term and whilst there's no urgent need to replace the Brazilian, having a world-class player to compete with him would significantly strengthen the Gunners' hopes of winning the Premier League.

Rodrygo would make the most sense with him likely to leave Real Madrid and him showcasing his ability at the elite level. Eze is also a good option with his versatility fitting perfectly to what Arteta wants from his players.

Both players fit the bill but Eze's availability at £68m - his release clause - means he is the smarter option.

Arsenal have wanted three attacking additions this summer from its inception. They have secured two in Viktor Gyokeres and Noni Madueke, fulfilling the desire to add a new striker while also bringing support and competition for Bukayo Saka.

The third singing would need to be a player who can offer strength to the left but potentially in other roles too. For me, Eberechi Eze would not just be a great signing for Arsenal but would be the signing of the transfer window for any club.

A player who can offer Arsenal elite-level quality in multiple roles, a match-winning moment from anywhere and join the growing group of England internationals that the club are both signing and developing from their youth team. Eze would be the cherry on the cake of an astonishing summer for the Gunners.

Once Arsenal get Viktor Gyokeres through the door, Andrea Berta should look to bring in a top left winger. Eberechi Eze would be a sensible signing, but I'd like to see the Gunners take a risk and go for Rafael Leao.

AC Milan failed to qualify for each of UEFA's three club competitions last season, so I reckon they would be willing to do business. The 26-year-old winger has notched at least 18 goals and assists in each of his last four years in the Serie A.

As Leao approaches his peak, he could explode on the European stage in a far stronger team. Rodrygo and Anthony Gordon have both been linked with moves to the Emirates Stadium this summer, but I can't see Arsenal making a move for either of them.

There could be an argument to suggest that Arsenal do not need to add any more fresh faces to their squad after the arrival of Gyokeres. A centre-forward was the key this summer and that appears to have been sorted.

Is Arsenal's strikeforce now on a par with Liverpool? Perhaps not, but few clubs will be able to compete with their spending this summer.

Maybe the next focus should be a move for Eberechi Eze. Crystal Palace's attacking midfielder is proven in the Premier League and would add another asset to this squad which is looking stronger than last term.

The only issue Arsenal have is that Palace are going to be reluctant to lose their star man, particularly as they work hard to stay in the Europa League. That being said, it is worth a try, surely?

Super work from Arsenal so far to get their top transfer targets, Gyokeres and Zubimendi sitting high and mighty at the top of their list of recruits. Noni Madueke is an interesting one to supplement the attack too.

There is just the sense that Arteta could do with one more attacking signing before the window slams shut, and for that perhaps they can look towards Germany.

Noise is growing again about the future of Xavi Simons, reportedly keen to take the next step of his career from RB Leipzig. The 22-year-old has looked sharp for the Bundesliga club, for whom he has 21 goals and 23 assists in 76 appearances, and has even already fashioned himself a place in the Dutch national team.

As somebody who has passed both Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain by, him performing well at Arsenal would be a similar success to how Martin Odegaard has turned out following his younger years at Real Madrid.

Arsenal must target an elite left winger after getting a deal across the line for Viktor Gyokeres. While there is an argument to suggest that the Gunners might not need to strengthen in that position, I do feel as though they can upgrade on Gabriel Martinelli and sign someone capable of producing more.

The man that Arsenal should target is Rodrygo. While the Brazilian hasn't often been used on the left at Real Madrid due to Vinicius Jr and Kylian Mbappe, I think that his best position is coming in from that side and cutting on to his favoured right foot. Also, his output - 68 goals and 50 assists in 269 matches is no mean feat.

I believe that Rodrygo could therefore take Arsenal to the very next level and push them nearer to the Premier League title season. A front line of Bukayo Saka, Gyokeres and Rodrygo with Noni Madueke, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Martinelli in reserve is a scary proposition for the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City.

Arsenal's business so far has been impressive. They've covered pretty much everywhere they needed heading into the summer when the arrivals of Gyokeres and Mosquera are announced.

For me, the only real area I would be looking at is the left flank. If possible, I'd bring in Eberechi Eze. He's got the style and link-up qualities that will really help Arsenal - particularly when attacking a low-block - which they'll likely be doing a lot this year.

Looking at the rest of the squad, I think a lot really depends on whether they see Myles Lewis-Skelly as a long-term option at left-back or whether Riccardo Calafiori becomes the stronger option there after a season interrupted by injuries - and then we're talking about more depth signings than starters.

Arguably the most important business remaining is to sell some players. The likes of Oleksandr Zinchenko and a couple of others aren't going to play much going forward; if they're moved on for a decent bit of cash, it will help out if they need to do any business in January.
